A great week this week — lots of variety and seeing people as well as good progress on prep for upcoming board sessions.

So what happened this week?

Caught up with Connie over lunch and got advice and guidance on some things which helped me unstick some things.

Had a walk and lunch with Dave which was really helpful and enjoyable, in part (but not mostly) because delicious sandwich from local cafe.

Saw Rich Smith for a coffee (Hackney alumni FTW) and shared some useful content and thinking about good digital services and designing for inclusion, the perils of playing monopoly*, comparing notes on life on the other side of DOS procurements. Was extremely good to see him in person.

Great conversation with Chris for my mid probation review and check in — was really good to reflect on work so far, and how I’m settling in. Also good to see that the objectives we wrote a few weeks ago are still largely right, and be able to add/tweak some as well.

Spent time polishing and planning content for digital board sessions next week and the week after — 2 in person and 2 virtual, and a mix of trusts.

And managed an early morning swim one morning at the Lido — always a great way to start the day. Noticeably less warm out of the water than in previous weeks . . .

What did I read this week?

This from Anna Randle at Collaborate about the opportunities for collaboration and change during the pandemic — and how we might bring those lessons with us into the deeper problems we’re facing now in the health and wellbeing of our society. Plot spoiler, it’s not going to be through top down, highly structured governance, but through trust, relationships and how we work with each other:

This from Rosie Collington and Mariana Mazzucato on rethinking outsourcing and the role of the state

and this blog post about cycling infrastructure and encouraging cycling** another spoiler alert its not number plates for bikes. . .

“we decided to turn the cyclist from a second class road user to a first class road user. We decided to give cyclists the right of way within cities.”

*I have a self imposed ban on playing this game, for reasons.

**my twitter feed is increasingly public space/cycling infrastructure content, which is awesome
